say hi to apong guan, he makes imho, penang's best apong. if you don't know what it is....well dear friends....you snooze you lose. i am not going to bastardize it by calling it p*****ke so you understand. what i will tell you is its hawker treats at its best. mix eggs, flour, sugar and donna what else ah guan did, topped with banana slices and sweet corn, he makes me salivate just thinking about it. apong guan is along jalan burmah. after a tasty meal of penang kwayteow, 6 of these later... my tummy was happy.
so who is this uncle you might ask..... another hero lah. uncle makes soy souce the way it should be. having tasted his kicap, i would say most if not all those at supermarkets are junk. soy source has always been something we add so things don't taste blend, these kicap add depth to dishes. there are many "premium soy source" out there at and they are "premium" with the price tag too. i dare say uncle's source will match many "premiums" products while priced "un-premium". use as a dip, or add to your cooking for that finishing touch. BEST.

as a child, putu mayam was one of my fav breakfast. made of rice flour, sugar and coconut, love the combo. to be honest, i have yet to grow out of this yummy stuff. i have never seen it made after all these years until my trip to penang last month. many western friends of mine would probably cringe having seen it made but this guys here is my hero. not only i was enlightened on how my fav breakkie was made, the freshly made putu mayam were galaxies beyond those i had in recent years. back home in the lion city, putu mayam are hard to find. when we do, it usually comes with angry neon orange colored sugar that is unreal in food. these came with brown sugar+gula melaka and finely grated coconut. i scoffed 4pc under 2 mins. its that good.
